Ductless mini-split head mounted high on a living room wall

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps on the North Shore

Ductless mini-splits are the most common heat pump in older North Shore homes that heat with radiators or baseboard and have no ducts. An outdoor unit connects to wall, ceiling or floor heads inside through a small line set. We connect you with independent local installers who can quote a system for a few rooms or the whole house.

Good fit if...

  • Your home has hot-water radiators or baseboard and no ductwork
  • You want air conditioning without window units
  • Some rooms are always too hot or too cold
  • You want to use less oil, propane or gas
  • You are finishing an attic, addition or ADU

How an install goes

  1. Heat-loss calculation. The installer measures the home and calculates heating need room by room.
  2. Design. Choose outdoor and indoor unit locations and confirm the equipment qualifies for your utility's rebate.
  3. Install. Mount units, run line sets and condensate drains, and add an electrical circuit under permit.
  4. Commission and rebate. The system is tested and set up, and rebate paperwork is filed. Some utilities require a post-install inspection.

Why a heat pump is worth a look

Efficiency, comfort and safety, with rebates that depend on your utility.

  1. 2 to 3 times as efficient

Mass Save says cold-climate heat pumps are 2 to 3 times as efficient as a boiler or furnace, and many heat efficiently down to -15°F.(Mass Save: Heat pump rebates)

  2. No combustion, no stored fuel

Heat pumps do not burn fuel in the home, so there is no in-home fuel storage and no carbon monoxide from the heating system.(Mass Save: Heat pump rebates)

  3. Heating and cooling in one

The same system provides air conditioning in summer.(Mass Save: Heat pump rebates)

  4. Local rebates differ by town

Wakefield (WMGLD), Reading-area towns (RMLD) and Peabody (PMLP) have municipal utilities with their own heat pump rebates. Most other North Shore towns are served by Mass Save sponsors.(WMGLD (Wakefield): Heat pump rebate, RMLD: Heat pump rebate or 0% interest loan, Peabody Municipal Light Plant: 2026 heat pump rebate program)
